Design Your Own Custom Tag

Whether you need to create an award winning tag to help merchandise your product or simply can’t find a stock industrial tag that works for your particular application, St. Louis Tag can help. The following information takes you step by step through the design process so that you can create a custom tag perfect for your needs.

Step 1 – Choose a Size

Many people choose the size of their tag by finding the closest standard size that will accommodate their content.  At St. Louis Tag, we have 12 standard sizes, but can easily create other sizes or die cut special shapes for your particular needs.

For your convenience, we have listed our 12 standard sizes and provided printable PDFs of each tag that can be downloaded and used as templates for your tag design. Go to Standard Sizes.

Step 2 – Choose a Material

While the most common material used in the industry is 13 pt. tag stock, 10 pt., 12 pt., and 15 pt. stock papers are sometimes specified. There are, however, many other materials to choose from.

Industrial tags requiring extra durability or high resistance to water and weather are often made from Tyvek®, Vinyl, and other polyvinyl synthetics.

Merchandise and garment tags are often four-color printed on high grade printing papers.

Carbon and carbonless papers are used to create multi-part or manifold tags.

When designing a tag, it is most important to determine the level of durability, weather resistance and functionality needed when determining the material. More on materials…

Step 3 – Choose a Color

White and Manila are two of our most popular colors because dark inks show up very well on them and they represent the least expensive paper. We have 19 other standard colors to choose from or we can start with a white tag and flood coat it with almost any PMS color to custom color match to your specifications.

Step 4 – Choose a Hole Size and Reinforcement Material

While many merchandise tags utilize simple holes in them, most industrial tags require fiber reinforcement patches or metal eyelets to make them more durable. Common sizes are 3/16” and 3/8”. Read more…

Step 5 – Choose an Attachment

Popular choices include cotton string, elastic string, and wire with state-of-the-art, automatic, affixing, attachment methods. Read more…

Step 6 – Choose a Printing Method

Most industrial tags utilize our lithographic printing process that can print in multiple colors on both sides of the tag. Ink colors are virtually limitless and special features like sequential numbering are easy to add.
