Dev Materials
At St. Louis Tag, we produce hang tags in a wide variety of materials to accommodate virtually every application, budget and graphical requirement that our clients have.
Primary Considerations
When choosing the ideal material for your hang tag, there are a few key factors to consider.
Water Resistance - If your tag will be used outdoors in the elements or subject to water or moisture, you should opt for a waterproof vinyl or Tyvek material for your tag.
Durability - While 13 pt. paper tags are the most popular and most cost-effective option for most applications, thicker paper, vinyl and tyvek tags are more durable.
Cost & Lead Time - While we can produce hang tags in many different types of paper, 13 pt. is the industry standard...and consequently quicker and more affordable.
Uncoated vs. Coated
Some of our paper stock options come coated or uncoated. This refers to the finish of the tag.
Uncoated Stock
Uncoated stock has a matte finish and feel. It allows for vibrant colors while still providing functionality, as you can use most writing materials on its surface with ease.
Coated Stock
Coated stock has a slight gloss and allows for better ink adherence. This is great for designs that utilize detailed graphics or have large areas of solid color. Coated stock provides rich colors for these features but has some resistance when it comes to writing on the tag. Permanent markers are suggested for writing on any side of the tag that is coated.
Primary Tag Materials
13pt. Paper
The most common material used in the hang tag industry is 13pt paper cardstock that is a bit thicker than most standard manila folders. It comes coated or uncoated in a number of standard colors and is sized to create 12 popular sizes with minimal scrap.
Vinyl
Vinyl provides good chemical resistance, weather resistance, and durability for industrial applications. Vinyl tags are ideal if the tag will be exposed to oils, solvents, chemicals, or other harsh conditions.
Tyvek® Tags
Tyvek® tags are a good choice for applications requiring durability, weather resistance, or water resistance. This synthetic material is tear-resistant, waterproof with some printed inks offering up some fade-resistance while sitting in INDIRECT sunlight, making it a good choice for outdoor equipment, industrial applications, and harsh environments.
Tyvek® tags can withstand exposure to chemicals, grease, weather, and operational abuse while maintaining readability. They're commonly used for backflow inspection tags, equipment rental tags, water shut-off tags, and fire extinguisher tags.

Multi-Part Tag Materials
Best for Tracking and Record-Keeping
Carbonless multi-part tags create instant documentation without the mess of traditional carbon paper. Multi-part tags allow you to keep permanent records while providing copies for different departments or processes.
Carbonless Paper
