Custom Hang Tag Services

At St. Louis Tag, we have a team of experienced tag designers that can help walk you through the process of designing and specifying the ideal tag for your application and budget. If you are working on your design during non-business hours (or just don't like talking to people), our Quote Wizard will also help walk you through the 8-Step Design Process.

With that said, here are the key elements involved in designing a custom hang tag.

Step 1Outline Your Needs

Before starting the design process, it is helpful to assemble an inventory of your needs. How many tags do you need? How long does it need to last? What do I want printed on my tag? The answers to these questions and more will ensure a smoother design process.

Step 2Choose a Material

For most indoor applications, we suggest using a 13pt. paper stock - as it's the industry standard - but we have plenty of options including recycled, carbon and carbonless papers. For outdoor applications or those requiring extra durability, we recommend vinyl and Tyvek.

Step 3Choose a Size & Shape

For most tags, the size will be determined by the amount of content that will be printed on the tag as well as its functionality. Our 12 standard sizes are all rectangular in shape, but custom tags can be die cut in virtually any shape or design one desires.

Step 4Choose a Color

With our extensive digital printing capabilities, we can produce tags in virtually any color…including 4-color process. However, many paper tags utilize 1 or 2 color printing on one of our 21 standard paper colors.

Step 5Choose a Printing Method

Depending on your needs, our in-house design team can work with you to lay out or typeset your hang tags and select the ideal printing method. We can even apply sequential numbering, barcodes and QR codes.

Step 6Choose a Hole Size & Reinforcement

The two standard hole sizes are 3/16" and 3/8". While we can drill holes of other sizes or produce tags with no holes, these are the two sizes for which we have metal eyelets and fiber patch reinforcements.

Step 7Choose an Attachment Method

Hang tags are typically sold with a poly/cotton blend string, elastic string or wire in looped or knotted styles, but specialty cottons and natural jute are also available.

Step 8Choose Additional Finishing Options

In addition to custom printing and die-cutting options, we produce many perforated, multi-part, folded and laminated tags. We also have the ability to add adhesive strips or produce environmentally-friendly tags featuring recycled papers, soy-based ink and natural jute strings.
